POLITY'S GUIDE TO: Polity
Social media acts as a 'news aggregator' by selectively showing news that only aligns with our personal beliefs. This news aggregator makes it easier for users to “seek out interactions with like-minded individuals who have similar values", making them "less likely to trust important decisions to people whose values differ from their own'. This is what many media theorists call an 'echo chamber' effect.
Through these mediums, disconnected echo-chambers are created, which are "distrustful of one another, and of official information sources.”
