NSW's Stadium Rebuild
NSW recently announced its decision to tear down & rebuild the ANZ & Allianz stadiums, as well as construct a new Western Sydney Stadium. This project will cost approximately $2.3 billion. These stadiums to be demolished are less than two decades old, & the planned redevelopments do not increase their capacities. In the case of the ANZ stadium, the redevelopment actually decreases the stadium's capacity from 85,000 to 75,000.
These proposed changes were made by the NSW Premier, Gladys Berejiklian as it is claimed that NSW's sporting infrastructure was falling behind the rest of the country, and a redevelopment will cement Sydney as Australia's number one event destination. This proposal has also drawn strong support from the NRL.
This plan has been met with criticism by the public, with Sydney Morning Herald sports commentator Peter FitzSimmons starting a change.org petition to boycott the plan, describing the $2 Billion plan as a “waste”. At the time of writing, it is 3,000 signatures away from its 150,000 signature goal.
